SHAHRP
School Health and Alcohol Harm Reduction Project
SHAHRP and SHAHRP 2000 Program Materials
The SHAHRP and SHAHRP 2000
teaching programs consists of a combination of training and resources
to equip teachers to conduct eight lessons in the first year of the
program (phase 1), five booster lessons in the following year (phase
2) and an additional four booster lessons two years later (phase 3).
The lessons provide a series of activities that are based on the
research evidence that can influence student behaviour change and
incorporate input from young people and teachers. If you would like
more information about the research evidence that underpins the SHAHRP
and SHARHP 2000 programs click on evidence based
features.
The SHAHRP and SHAHRP 2000
teaching programs contains the following materials:
-
A teachers manual that provides eight structured lesson plans for
phase 1 (year eight), five lesson plans for phase 2 (year nine) and
four lessons plans for phase 3 (year 11). These lesson plans
incorporate various strategies for information dissemination, small
group activities, role plays and discussions. Sample questions, to
help facilitate discussion and coaching points to aid in the
management of the activities have been included with each lesson. Many
of these coaching points are based on the comments of teachers who
have taught the programs.
"It was very easy
to follow, you could teach the program just from the manual without
doing the training but the training certainly made it easier for me. I
really appreciated the coaching boxes, obviously written by a teacher
for teachers." (Teacher)
-
A student workbook
has been designed for phase one and
phase two of the program. The two workbooks are designed to
stimulate and engage the interest of the students. The workbooks
provide the information and facts necessary for the students to
perform practical activities and encourage them to further explore
each activity. In addition the workbooks provide space for the
students to record what they have done and learned as a way of
consolidating the activity.
"The kids loved the
workbook, the colours. Made the unit seem special and important and
somehow I think it raised the status of Health Ed for
them." (Teacher)
-
The "Lets Look
At..." trigger video from the Rethinking Drinking program
is used in conjunction with phase 2 of the program. The video features
situations young people may experience from exposure to alcohol and
aims to generate discussion about avoiding or minimising the harms
associated with alcohol use. The video is available from Curtin
University, Centre for Education Advancement; Phone: (08) 9266
3219
-
The "How Will You
Feel Tomorrow" video from the "How Will You Feel
Tomorrow" education resource is used in conjunction with phase 3
of the program. The video features alcohol related scenarios relevant
to older teenagers (16 17 year olds) and aims to generate
discussion about avoiding, minimising and them coping with the harms
associated with alcohol use.
-
The "Bush
Telegraph" commercial is used in conjunction with phase 3 of the
program. The commercial features an alcohol related road accident and
aims to generate discussion about how to prevent people who are
affected by alcohol from driving and how to prevent people from
accepting lifts from a driver affected by alcohol.
Both the "How Will You
Feel Tomorrow" video and the "Bush Telegraph"
commercial are available from NDRI (08 9266 1600)
